"England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty." This headline is from one of the main newspaper outlets that covered World War 1 at the time. The Daily Express gave all the latest stories about what was happening during the war to keep the people updated in England and was one of the most read newspapers for the war. When the war started, countries all around the world started drafting men to have as many soldiers as possible. The image was found from one of the newspaper's 2014 articles reminiscing back to August 3, 1914.
This is one of the nursing uniforms from Canada's side. It belonged to Lieutenant Annie H. McNicol who worked for the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Many women started to work during the war, some taking the jobs available due to the lack of men and some taking jobs in the war such as nurses. The women in World War 1 who were on the battlefield in these uniforms helped saved many lives.
Pigeon message kit's like this one were part of the messaging system that helped people on the battlefield talk to allies on the other side. They would write their message on the notepad and then place it in the tiny silver capsule that they would attach to a pigeon's leg. Since pigeons have a natural ability to return to their home, this system ended up having a 95% success rate. This messaging system was of incredible use during the war since the message had less of a chance to be found by the other side unlike radios.
This map highlights international frontiers from 1917 as recognized by the U.S. during that time. It shows major shipping routes and the location of undersea phone cables. Maps like this one are what helped leaders plan their strategies for attack or their routes to get supplies. Essentially, this was their way of figuring out where everything was and how to get to or avoid specific areas.
These are two unexploded British bombs that were found in 2014. They have been shown to be from a previous battlefield in the Somme. Hundreds of explosives that never went off like these ones have been found all over the world from many different wars. They help tell the story about what happened in that location and bring more of a perspective on how different our lives have been because of these wars.
